The GPS lab was designed to be a culminating assessment of the students understanding of animals and their adaptations. While the lab should be completed in about an hour, it is not a new concept. The children will have just worked on and completed the unit titled “Guess Who? Guess What?” The lab will clearly be a connection to the earlier work completed by the students. While small in number, the completion of the lab itself will require the student to be able to follow simple directions, work cooperatively with team members, and show their understanding of science and math concepts. This particular lab was designed with the understanding that only two GPS units were available in this particular building. Because of this, parent volunteers will be utilized to ensure students are being monitored at all times. Also, prior to the parent’s participation, the teacher will invite them for an informal informational opportunity to really understand what the students are doing and how to assist if they get stumped. Since the teacher will have ample parent support, during the informational meeting, parents will be sought to arrive early and to place the clues at the appropriate waypoints. Since the investigation will remain on school grounds, a permission slip is not needed. However, a detailed explanation of the lab and the expectations will be sent home to parents. In the event of inclement weather, an alternative date will be selected with parent volunteers to complete the investigation. In the event of lost clues, parent volunteers will have an extra set for each waypoint to help deal with situations that are generally out of our control.
